2nd Grade CogAT Testing

February 2016


Dear Parents,


Your second grade student will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Form 7 during the week of February 22, 2016, with practice testing the week of February 15, 2016. CogAT is a nationally normed standardized abilities test that is widely used across the country. This is not a basic skills or an achievement test. In the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, the results of CogAT are considered in identifying students for the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE). The scores provide a description of the student’s cognitive resources for learning that teachers can use to establish instructional objectives.


Teachers will not use the results from the CogAT to grade your child. However, teachers and administrators at your school may use the results to monitor and make decisions concerning your child’s educational plan. Scores from assessments such as the CogAT cannot replace a teachers observations and judgment, but they can provide useful, supplementary information for the teacher, parent and student. When teachers and parents use test results in conjunction with other information from the classroom and the home, they can work together to identify and address the educational needs of each student.


Parents and teachers should encourage students to do their best on the CogAT, as they should for all of their school activities. It is recommended not to place too much emphasis on the importance of this test or to make students feel anxious or stressful about the outcome.


You will receive the test results before the end of the school year.

Our Philosphy

Welcome to 2nd Grade! A pivotal year where we move from learning to read to reading to learn. We have implemented a Common Core standards-based curriculum using Pearson's Envision math and Science programs, the Houghton Mifflin Language Arts program and Scott Foresman's Social Studies curriculum. Reader's and Writer's Workshops are also a central part of our curriculum and are based on New York's Columbia University's Reading & Writing Project which has been adopted district-wide. All of our instruction incorporates hands-on learning experiences using cooperative groups to provide differentiated instruction through multiple intelligences.  

What are 2nd Graders Learning in January?

Math: Students are just finishing up 2 digit addition with regrouping.  We are continuing on with our regrouping skills by moving into 2 digit subtraction with regrouping. 


Math (Pilot): Addition and Subtraction Within 100 and Continue Practicing Addition and Subtraction Facts up to 20 for Computational Fluency, Addition with regrouping.


Phonics: Long Vowels and the Two Sounds for "G" and "C"


Writing: The new year brings new tools to our writing kit.  Students are writing "How-tos" to teach others how to do something.  We will also be beginning a non-fiction report in the next few weeks.


Reading: Non-fiction (Soon our students will be learning how to use text features such as the glossary, captions, and an index)


Science: Erosion and Weathering (Canyons, Wind and Water Shaping the Land, Preventing Erosion)


Social Studies: Producers and Consumers

2nd Grade Internet Resources

How to Make Reading More Interactive at Home?

Although your child may be reading fluently, it is important to continue reading aloud to your child and making reading an INTERACTIVE experience. Before your child reads a book, take a picture walk and have your child make predictions about what they think the story will be about. Preview any "tricky words" they may come across and talk about that spelling pattern. Go over any difficult vocabulary words that your child may not know before reading. Ask your child to tell you who are the main characters? What is the setting? What did the character want? What was the problem? How was the problem solved? What was the lesson or theme of the story? What genre was the book? What was the author's purpose? You can make this a shared reading experience and model what good reading looks and sounds like. Happy Reading Second Grade Families!
