Welcome to Kindergarten!

What are we working on?

  • Reader's Workshop:  We are working on strengthening our reading muscles.  Our unit focuses on tackling more challenging books, using letter-sound knowledge to help read words, checking our reading, and becoming a stronger reader by using everything we know about our reading super powers.

  • Writer's Workshop:  Our current unit focuses on Writing to Teach Others.  We are making our own “How-To” books.  The children are having a lot of fun writing, in steps, how to do something that they already know how to do (ex. make a sandwich, ride a scooter, do a cartwheel).  You will enjoy reading through their books when we send them home at the end of the unit.

  • Word Study and Phonics:  We focus on two sight words a week.  Each class studies two site words a week in a variety of ways.  These words can be found in your child's homework.

  • Math:  We just finished up learning about capacity and are jumping in to number pairs and addition/subtraction to 10.  We’ve already started composing and decomposing numbers under 10.  We will practice our knowledge of the value of numbers and work with embedded numbers to reason about and solve addition and subtraction and equations.

  • Social Studies:  We will soon be learning about Presidents of the past as we honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

  • Handwriting:  Handwriting Without Tears focuses on uppercase and lowercase letter formation.  We practice hand position, pencil grip, and correct directionality while forming letters.

  • Art:  Our Art Docent program is amazing!  We are so lucky to have this program at our school.  Parent volunteers attend art lessons and then teach the lesson to our students every month.

Help your child get off to a great start each day!

There are many things you can do at home to ensure your child gets off to a great start on the first day and everyday!

  • Observe appropriate bedtimes.  Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast each morning.
  • Pack your child's Kindergarten bag before bedtime so it's ready to go in the morning.
  • Set aside a block of time each day to devote to homework and reading.
  • Share your own positive experiences about school with your child.
  • Ask your child specific questions about their day.

Philosophy

Our philosophy as kindergarten teachers at Quail Run Elementary School is to teach your children the skills they need to be successful in kindergarten, and prepare them with a strong academic foundation. Our curriculum emphasizes academic, social, physical, and emotional development taught within a nurturing, engaging environment. Since each student arrives on the first day of kindergarten at a different stage of readiness, we teach these skills at a level appropriate to the development of each child. We want to help your child maintain a positive self-image and develop responsibility and independence that will support them throughout their academic career!
